Vassilis G. Koutkias received the Diploma in Electrical & Computer Engineering (1998) and the MSc (2001) and PhD (2005) in Medical Informatics all from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece.
He is currently a Research Scientist (Grade C’) with the Institute of Applied Biosciences (INAB), at the Centre of Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH), with specialty “Biomedical Informatics with emphasis on drug safety systems”. His research interests lie in the area of Biomedical Informatics and eHealth, with emphasis on knowledge engineering, clinical decision support systems, as well as pervasive health systems, with major application areas patient safety and personalized healthcare.
From 2013-2015, he was granted an individual Marie Curie fellowship for experienced researchers (the SAFER project: http://safer-project.eu), concerning the development of advanced pharmacovigilance systems, which was conducted at INSERM (Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale), U1142, Paris, FRANCE. Since 2000, he conducted R&D in more than 15 EU-funded R&D projects in the fields of patient safety, personal health systems, AAL and eInclusion, with the Lab of Medical Informatics, AUTH, and CERTH-INAB.
He is lecturing and coordinating modules at the MSc Program of Medical Informatics of AUTH, while he has been also appointed as a Visiting Lecturer in University Paris 6 (UPMC), and as Adjunct Lecturer in AUTH, the Hellenic Open University, and the University of Western Macedonia.
He is co-author of one book, co-editor of two books (Springer and IOS Press), co-editor of one electronic volume and author/co-author of more than 120 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, book series and conference proceedings.
He is an Associate Editor of the BMC Medical Informatics & Decision Making journal.
