Biography

George Hatzimarkos, the Governor of South Aegean, was born in Rhodes. In 1997 he got involved in community politics, when he was elected to the position of Financial Supervisor on the Five-Member Direction Committee of the CCI Dodecanese. In 2001, he was reelected, and acceding to the office of Vice-President of the CCI of the Dodecanese. In 2006, he was elected President of the Chamber and he remained in office until the 31st of December 2010, when he chose to resign, and enter the race for the office of Mayor of the Municipality of Rhodes as head of the bill of the independent municipal movement dubbed “Rhodos Mprosta” (Rhodes Ahead); he was eventually elected obtaining 42.3% of the votes.

In May 2014, he was elected Governor of South Aegean with the independent regional movement “Mprosta to Notio Aigaio”. From the end of May 2016 he is the President of the CPMR (Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe) island Committee.
